Urge Authorities to return monkey to its family!

  • by: Cinthia Nemoto

We ask the Authorities to reconsider this unique case, considering it is about an elderly monkey who won't be able to return to the wildlife nor will be happy away from his family.

Chico, an elderly monkey, was taken from his human family after 37 years and put into custody. Knowing that Chico’s lifespan is about 40 years, it is not right to take him away from the family that always cared for him.

Monkeys are emotionally connected to their families the same way as humans. Chico is considered part of the Carmona’s family. He never disturbed neighbours nor displayed aggression.

We understand it is illegal to keep wild animals as pets in Brazil, but this a unique case that deserves some thoughts. The Carmona family received Chico as a gift from a friend, back in 1976, decades before a 1998 law that banned the acquisition and possession of wild animals.

His formal owner, a 71-years old retired lady, who has cardiac problems, is suffering with the separation as someone had taken her son from her.

The family is willing to do whatever is necessary to comply with any requirement to have Chico back.

Please, Authorities, reconsider this case and make the call to benefit all these lives!
