Save the Pitbull Family

This petition is against the Durban and Coastal SPCA’s / NSPCA's policy to put down unclaimed or unwanted American pit bull terriers and pit bull cross-breeds without the option of adoption.

I am trying to create more awareness of this problem. The NSPCA feels that this breed is too aggressive and I am sure this is not the only breed being discriminated against but right now the Pitbull family needs our voices!

Here is the link to read up a little more on this topic:

is is the link to Jacaranda’s website and the news story : http://www.jacarandafm.com/post/support-for-pitbull-death-policy

Please sign this petition so that we can send it out to the NSPCA.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Council of SPCAs ("NSPCA")

Marcelle Meredith

Dear Madam,

We write to you with regards to the quoted decision made to put down any pitbull handed over to the NSPCA which was recently publicised by Jacaranda FM (http://www.jacarandafm.com/post/support-for-pitbull-death-policy/)

As you will note from the attached petition, signed by many animal lovers, we think that this decision made is purely cruel.  How can one judge a dog purely by its breed? Yes this breed can be aggressive, however that can be said for many other breeds or any breed dog.  A dog's nature is dependent on how it is handled and raised by its owner.

Yes, they are often bred as fighting dogs however these dogs can be rehabilitated – has this been taken into consideration?

I would like to quote from the NCPCA's website what they wrote about you as the CEO of the NSPCA: "Marcelle's unselfish commitment to animal welfare has been recognised within our own country and internationally.  In 2012, Marcelle was the winner in the Eco-Angel award category of the Enviropaedia Eco-Logic Awards. In the same year the Humane Society of the United States, honoured Marcelle with an award for "extraordinary commitment and achievement in animal protection.”

Marcelle's insight, dedication and forward-thinking have been major contributors to improving the lives of countless animals in our country. Her compassion and courage has become the benchmark to which others aspire."

Can this decision be revoked?  Can you not look at other avenues available to you?  Can you not bring in behaviorists for help where this breed is concerned?  There are many pupils studying to become an animal behaviorist who must put in hours who could possibly assist you free of charge for assessments ect.

PLEASE LETS REVOKE THIS DECISION AND HELP THESE ANIMALS IN NEED.

Faithfully,

Tania van der Mescht
