Rescue shelters for stray cats and dogs, neuter/spay program included;

The human society is becoming more and more cruel towards animals, they are abused, tortured, killed in gas chambers, skinned alive... The list in endless.

We need a change. A big change. People's attitudes to strays vary from country to country, but there are always those, who have the courage and heart to step up to the challenge and make things happen.

Most countries will collect the strays in high-kill shelters and use either gas chambers or other cruel method to remove the excess animals. Some countries use mobile crematoriums and throw the living dogs in to the flaming inferno alive. Others go and kill the strays in plain view in the middle of the day, as people are passing by, and often the killings are pure torture, traumatizing children and even adults who had to witness such acts.

There are more humane ways to do it. A worldwide spraying and neutering program for strays will help stop the breeding of strays. They also become less aggressive, and can be easily rehabilitated in rescue shelters for adoptable pets, thus minimizing the puppy mill production.

The most difficult situation is in the Eastern European countries, they have only few rescue shelters run by private people and depending on donations. There are, luckily, a few municipal no-kill&rescue shelters, but they too need donations to keep running.

It is time to look at the animal population with more humane view. The stray animals are increasing in number due to e.g. the economic instability.

A worldwide consensus would be needed to stop these brutal killings of strays. And that is why the United Nations is the best forum to set such programs and projects going or at least make the countries to take initiative in these matters.
