Hello, everyone. I'm Kamee Mitra and have been an active memeber of the band since I was in 4th grade. I love music and I have continued to participate in the marching, concert and jazz bands from my freshman to my junior year. Although this coming 2014-2015 school year, I am unable to; not because I didn't want to, but because the Parkland Administration and counseling offices would not allow it. Being a student who wants to be competitive in all aspects of my academic career, I want to take AP classes and a language in order to enrich myself and reach my academic goals. All together, these classes take up 8 periods, although with band included, I would need a 10 period schedule day for my AP classes including band to work.
I created a solution to have my lunch period alternating with band and band study so that my classes would fit into a 9 period schedule day. I'm not asking to take lunch out of my schedule, simply for it to be on a different period on odd and even days to accomodate band. Although when I ran it by my counselor, an assistant principals and principal, they all denied the valid schedule I had presented them that would solve my scheduling dilemma.
Not being able to be in the band means that I would not be able to participate in marching band, concert band, jazz band or pit orchestra, which are activities that I have been in since freshman year.
What's so wrong about having lunch different periods every other day? What's so wrong with wanting to be in band and taking AP classes? What's so wrong about wanting to be a competitive and music-loving human being?
All I need is for someone to say yes and approve my schedule, so please help me convince them!
If you believe that I should be able to participate and continue to be a Parkland High School band member, please sign this petition!
