Wexford pound, located in Ballycarney,Co.Wexford Ireland,is extremely selective in relation to which rescues it maintains a relationship with. This adversely affects the unfortunate pound dogs and severely decreases their prospects of rehoming.Wexford pound has one of the highest kill rates in the country and one of the poorest records in relation to rescue affiliation. We, irelands animal lovers, demand a change in the system implemented at this pound. We want this pound to become more accessible to reputable rescues,we want adequate information to be provided in relation to a dogs available date for rehoming. We also want to see that dogs are given an optimum chance of survival. This can be achieved by allowing rehomable dogs to be photographed on a weekly basis, and subsequently advertised through relevent mediums such as a pound website or dedicated rescue associated social media sites. Many pounds have successfully adopted this approach, as have many animal rights activists associated with various rescues across the country. We also want to see a proper rehoming policy implemented at this pound and see an introduction of a minimum rehoming fee, which will further protect the welfare of these animals and reduce the number of dogs being handed over to undesirables for resale.A rehoming fee could be utilized for the mandatory vaccination and microchipping of dogs prior to release to secured adopters. This provides traceability, and introduction of a rehoming fee would act as a deterrent to people who do not have an animals best interests at heart. We demand change at Wexford Dog Pound. We will not stop until we achieve the objectives outlined above.
