Demand #MayaJama accountability for racist, derogatory, homophobic and fat-shaming comments now!

  • recipient: Maybelline UK and BBC Radio1 and Sky One

Maya Indea Jama is a British television and radio presenter of Somali-Swedish descent. A former broadcast journalist for MTV and girlfriend of UK grime rapper "Stormzy." Ms. Jama was hired to represent Maybelline Cosmetics, as the new face of Maybelline Fit Me Campaign in March 2018. She also has her own radio show on BBC Radio 1 in which she remains employed by both Corporations.

This past April, a number of Maya Jama's tweets were unearthed in which the TV personality, who has a Somali father and Swedish mother, tweeted: '"Dark skin bitches shaving their head expecting to look like Amber Rose, when really they end up looking like Micheal Jordan." Looooooooool'.

The former 4Music presenter also tweeted a 'fat' joke, in which she says "Your not thick your fat."

Furthermore, Maya Jama tweeted an offensive meme about dark skin woman in 2013, in which she tweets "Team Shadow", and includes the image of a dark-skinned black woman with white lips and caption "Bitches be like shine bright like a diamond." Tweets unearthed jokes about the Disabled getting in her way on the streets of London, the Autistic to whom she says can be slapped because they're not human and using the slur "Faggot."

Maybelline, Sky One nor BBC Radio1 should allow her to represent a culture, race or group with such divisive and racist beliefs. It is our belief as consumers that Black Women must be represented respectfully by a figure who has no such past. All women do not stand by these statements and should not be represented by Ms. Jama.

The Corporate sponsors and Maybelline, BBC Radio 1 and Sky One #Silence on the issue, sends a message that they support her. Consumers must send an equally resounding message that we are not ok with her representation on air or through this "All Women" campaign moving forward. All Women "Reject" Ms. Jama's beliefs and do not want her representing our culture or race.

Her apology only came when caught, as a woman she could have deleted these slurs and insensitive comments a long time ago. Past or Present, it's unacceptable. Remove her from our airwaves and cosmetic campaigns. Corporations should release a statement rejecting Ms. Jama's tweets.

Your views are read daily, we're committed to raising all concerns to Ms. Jama's employers. What inspires us, are your personal accounts & world-wide support on an issue that has run rampant for far too long. "Colorism/Colourism" must be addressed. Ms. Jama seems unbothered as she appeared on a UK show last night, joking, no reflection on her hurtful Tweets. Let's get to 500!
