Demand the 2015 Ontario Health Curriculum for Elementary Students

    Dear Citizens of Ontario,

You know, kids these days, live in a world filled with technology and instant access to all kinds of websites. The media forms our youth are exposed to, may give these impressionable young people a false sense of reality, and well, the wrong information. So, if adults in families aren’t comfortable talking about sexual health, mental health, consent, substance use and abuse, topics surrounding gender, scientific names of body parts, then who are kids supposed to talk to? Who is the person they can ask questions to if they have them?

    The answer is me.

And about 80,000 other elementary teachers who are charged with keeping children safe in their classroom from September to June. Me. I’m the one who can tell students that consent is verbal and ongoing (Criminal Code of Canada). I’m the one who can give students access to additional information and direct them to organizations like public health, so that they can make informed decisions. I’m the one who ensures that ‘my kids’ are all welcome and safe in OUR classroom.

The rescinding of the 2015 Ontario Health Curriculum is very troubling to me. So troubling in fact, that for the first time, I’ve been making my political views known on social media platforms. If me, an almost 42-year-old, is so tightly connected to social media, what the hell does our Premier of the province think our kids are doing in their free time?
Children/youth/young adults- call them what you want are having sex. They are sexually active with others. They are using drugs. I learned about sex from a newspaper article that was left on my kitchen table at 16. If I was informed earlier, maybe I would have made different choices in life.

But the real reason I find this movement so devastating is because I teach Grade 8. I see the physical, emotional and psychological changes in my students every day. When they arrive on the first day of school, they will be a completely different person when they walk out of our classroom in June. I need to be able to answer questions for those who have no one else to ask. I need to be the one who tells them “no means no.” My kids depend on me. And I can’t sleep at night knowing that my government, who yes, was democratically elected, is blindly ignoring the reality of daily life and the evolution of Canadian society.
How is it that we have a leader in government that wants to ban cell phones from classrooms

My moral imperative is screaming right now. It has been since the provincial government removed the 2015 health curriculum, and informed the residents of Ontario that the 1998 curriculum would be delivered instead, coming this school year.

I'm asking you to sign and share this petition if you believe that going backwards in education is fundamentally wrong.

We can go backwards on this one. We just can’t.
