Urge Congress and President Obama to Ban Ivory Sales in U.S. and Extend International Ivory Sale Ban

In spite of the International Fund for Animal Welfare's massive petition (90,000+ signed as 2011), the U.S. is still the world's 2nd biggest market for elephant ivory.  Please urge the President to issue an executive order under the Endangered Species Act banning all ivory sales in the U.S., and ask Congress to make it a law that ivory cannot be imported or sold in the U.S.  Ask them also to go to the international C.I.T.E.S. conference in March and push for a complete international ban on ivory trade.

Without these actions, elephants will be extinct in the wild within decades; they are being slaughtered by international crime syndicates to finance drug and sex trafficking and violent revolutions.  In the 90's the international ban on ivory sales helped halt that slaughter and increased elephant numbers by several hundred thousand.  We can do it again if we ban the ivory trade.

Dear President Obama,

Thank you for a million elephants that may be born because you banned the U.S. ivory trade, and for the billions of humans that may know a world with elephants because of your action.

Now it is time for you to take the next step and help to ban the international ivory trade, by leading the global organization, the Convention on Internation Trade in Exotic Animals, in enacting that ban throughout the globe, an action which will empower all nations' enforcement against this crime-syndicate activity.

Without this action, according to the leading experts in the field, African elephants will be extinct in the wild within 10 years.  With it, African national governments will be encouraged to enact and enforce their own bans on poaching elephants.

This action can be crucial in maintaining, and in many cases restoring, the biodiversity of the entire African continent.

I am submitting our petition, signed by over 500 people in just the last few weeks.

Thank you again for your timely action in banning the U.S. ivory trade.

Yours respectfully,

Carol Long

Update #110 years ago
Victory! Elephant supporters won half the battle this past week, when President Obama announced on the ivory trade within the United States! I will forward the petition and thanks to the President, and ask that he also get the CITES conference to ban the international ivory trade at their March meeting. Look for my new petition to Obama for the international trade ban.
