Colorado Midwives & Friends of Midwives against The Midwifery Task Force

In 2014 a Midwifery Task Force has been created by the former president of the Colorado Midwives Association along with the Director of Direct Entry Midwives from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, to govern, oversee and police the licensed midwives of Colorado.

The Colorado Midwives Association was originally created to advocate for midwives, promote education, create and promote legislative changes, and to be a voice for the midwifery community.  Making this decision without consultation of the Colorado State midwives as a whole is NOT representing the "VOICE" of midwifery as a whole in colorado.

This Task Force has been created by a select group of individuals from the CMA, who have leveled themselves as authority over the midwifery community in Colorado.  It has been done without peer review and representation from all areas of Colorado.  There are many midwives, and "friends" of midwives who do not agree with this form of dictatorship.  As a result there is much fallout for al,l including the individual who chooses a homebirth.

There are many licensed midwives in Colorado who will not sign this petition, because of fear of being put on the RADAR by this task force

Midwifery is legal in 28 states of the United States. Each state having different regulations, and laws regarding the pracitce of midwifery. It is true that Colorado may need to clarify rules and regulations, however, having a Task Force symbolizes that there is criminal activity, this is NOT the case.  As in any profession such as Doctors, Chiropractors, accupuncturists, and homeopathic practioners, there are some individuals who pracitice dangerously, but each profession has its own process of peer review that helps to go about bringing out these descrepancies.  These other professions do NOT have a Task Force.  Midwives in Colorado are trained and certified by the North American Registery of Midiwives, NARM.  Each individual must practice within her/his limits knowing the regulations, and even more importantly decerning when Normal birth is no longer an option, and we must defer to a medical professional.

If you are a midwife, or a friend of midwives, please sign this petition  if you believe that Colorado Midwives do NOT need to be "policed" with a task force, and should be able to make decisions through peer review, evidence and consultation with the state regulartory agency in regard to rules and regulations of the midwifery profession.

If you would like more information on the pracitce of midwifery, or information about other state lincensure for midwives please see Midwvies Alliance of North America(MANA) and North American Registry of Midwives (NARM)

I am signing this letter as a concerned individual for the midwifery community of Colorado.  A Task Force has been created by select individuals from the Colorado Midwives Association, (CMA), and the Department of Regulatory Agency (DORA) that is NOT representative of the VOICE of the Colorado midwives.

The Colorado Midwives Association was originally created to advocate for midwives, promote education, create and promote legislative changes, and to be a voice for the midwifery community.  Making this decision without consultation of the Colorado State midwives as a whole is NOT representing the "VOICE" of midwifery in Colorado. It is more productive to create peer group discussions, and education before immediate police action of midwives.

This decsion will be very detrimental to the Colorado licensed midwife, creating fear and conflict among midwives, and most importantly the individuals who want to have a homebirth will find their choices limited.

Midwifery is not the practice of medicine but assitance in a planned, normal healthy homebirth.  A midwife is trained and skilled to know when the pregnancy or birth becomes high risk.  I am an advocate for homebirth, and a family's right to choose homebirth. There are many other options to consider to help educate and ultimately discipline midiwives in the rare case that mistakes are made, as in many other professions such as chiropractors, accupuncturists, and MD's.  A Midwifery Task Force in inappropriate in a licensed profession.

A midwifery task force is set in place to oversee and "police" the licensed midwife, taking freedom from the practioner and the consumer.  I am opposed to a Colorado Midwifery Task Force.  Please reconsider forming a Task Force in Colorado to "police" midwives.
