Texas: Eliminate Costly Fees for Medical Care in Prisons!

  • by: Kailey L.

In Texas prisons, inmates must pay $100 a year for medical care. Some prisoners make a measly 4 cents an hour, but the state overall doesn't even require that inmates are paid hourly wages for their work. This means that in some cases, inmates would never make enough money to see a doctor. This horrific, wageless labor becomes even more unfair when they are forced to pay a small fortune for any medical attention at all.

$100 can be impossibly expensive for inmates, even though it may seem cheap for general members of the population. This is a cruel and inhumane living condition for inmates, many of which committed non-violent crimes, that will never be able to afford proper medical care.

Medical care is a human right, and inmates who are already not guaranteed a wage can very rarely afford it. Sign this petition now to tell the Texas Department of Criminal Justice: eliminate this unjust, costly medical fee for Texas prisoners!
