How we choose our leaders affects everything in our lives from the water we drink to our health to the roads we drive on. Right now, we have an outdated electoral system that gives all the power to the leader of the party who gets the most seats. This first past the post (FPTP) system does not allow millions of Canadians voices to be represented in Canada.
Proportional Representation (PR) is a different electoral system that allows representation based on how much of the vote a party gets. In this system, the Green party, which received almost a million votes across the country would have a proportional amount of seats, significantly more than the one that they got.
Right now the Canadian government has promised the elimination of the FPTP system. However, PM Justin Trudeau has publicly stated he favours a ranked ballot that could favour the Liberals over other parties. PR would give voice to more Canadians in parliament and would increase voter turnout as no one would feel their vote was wasted. This is a system for a mature democracy such as ours.
By signing today you are sending a strong message that the strength of our democracy matters and we need the most voices represented on parliament hill as possible to create it.
To the Honourable Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Monsef,
I strongly advocate for the implementation of Proportional Representation (PR) in the Canadian electoral system. I know that you are considering different options and I believe that proportional representation is the best option for all Canadians.
PR will best best for this country because it will increase voter turnout, which reached its highest point in ten years at 69.1% in the last election. I think this is highly problematic and that many voters think that their votes don't matter. PR will help more votes matter in Canada.
PR is better than a ranked system because it offers the best representation for the most voters. I know this will make a stronger democracy.
