Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Do Not Dismiss Your Sexual Assault Cases!

  • by: Paige D
  • recipient: Bob Paulson, Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada

Canadian police investigators dismiss one out of every five sexual assault cases as unfounded, which means the police never investigate these cases and do not consider the assaults to be crimes. This shocking news was revealed after journalists at the Globe and Mail conducted a 20-month-long investigation.

Once the news broke, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) had the opportunity to promise to look back into these cases and ensure that justice is served for these assault survivors. But instead, they're refusing to review past sexual assault cases.

The Globe and Mail explains that:

"The Ontario Provincial Police alone plans to pore over approximately 4,000 sexual-assault investigation reports that officers deemed unfounded between 2010 to 2014."

It is completely unacceptable that the police dismissed 4,000 sexual assault cases as unfounded within just a single province. In fact, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police has a history of disproportionately marking these cases as "unfounded" as compared with other reported crimes.

Considering that 6 out of every 100 sexual assault cases are actually reported to the police, the RCMP needs to ensure they are doing everything in their power to help victims of sexual assault.

Sexual assault cases should never be ignored.

Please sign to tell the RCMP to reverse their decision and review the high number of sexual assault cases.

Dear Mr. Paulson,

I strongly urge you to revise your decision and review the past sexual-assault cases that have been dismissed as unfounded.  This decision is not fair to the sexual-assault victims and needs to be taken seriously.
