Please sign and share this petition everywhere in an effort to get Ohio to change their laws as a way to protect dogs left outdoors. They currently have no legal protection for dogs that are kept outdoors year-round, even in frigid temperatures, subjecting the animals to hypothermia and being frozen; an absolute sign of animal cruelty and abuse.

A man in Ohio ended up surrendering his beagle dogs that have been left outside in the cold. Winters can be quite brutal and ravaging to animals, often with fatal results. If you as a human cannot be outside for long periods and could not walk barefoot in the elements, imagine the effect the weather has on your dogs. This 83-year old owner of two beagles did not want to bring his pets inside but was continually reported by his neighbors and social media due to their presence outside in frigid temperatures. The man only surrendered the dogs because he could not take the pressure any longer, not because of his concern for the dogs.

The two Beagles, Bo and Bob, lived in a small outdoor cage, separated from each other by chicken wire. Calls came in from all over the country due to the photos of Bo and Bob online and the police department in Youngstown, Ohio was constantly alerted of the situation. They were turned over to the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s Office and a Mr. Dave Nelson. Despite the conditions, Nelson says there's nothing that he or the police could have done about the dogs.

The problem is that legally, the man did nothing wrong because it is not unlawful to leave dogs outside in freezing cold weather in Ohio! The dogs were hunting dogs, classified as working dogs but the fact still remains, even a working dog can suffer and die from cold weather! It appears that animal organizations are trying to get stricter regulations regarding leaving dogs outdoors in harsh weather. We need to urge the state Senate and Governor of Ohio to please protect the animals and pass strict laws banning animals from residing outdoors, with shelter or not, which can be fatal.

State Senate and Governor of Ohio – Please implement some strict laws and regulations regarding keeping pets, especially dogs outdoors in winter weather. Whether the dog is a pet or a working animal, cold is cold and abusive for the dog. Many dogs have frozen or become hypothermic due to cold temperatures; enforce some harsh laws banning any dog owner from keeping the dogs outdoors during cold and abusive weather. Also ensure that anyone who does leave the dog out be charged and punished with animal abuse, neglect and cruelty!!!
