Gwinnett County Board of Education has tentatively designated adjacent property north of Anderson Livsey Elementary School (Highway 124) as the location of a GIVE Center. The center has been listed as GIVE South in the 2012 - 2017 Building Program Data as of 9/17/15. While no funding or plans have been identified to date, the intent has been confirmed by Dr. Steve Flynt, BOE Chief Strategy and Performance Officer, and BOE Committee Member Dr. Robert McClure, District IV, 2015 Vice-Chairman. The project is listed for 2018. The Gwinnett InterVention Education (G.I.V.E.) Center serves the needs of students with discipline issues that prevent them from attending their neighborhood school.
This petition speaks to the need to relocate the GIVE South Center to another location for the following reasons:
1] Geographic location does not meet the needs of the county. The intent of establishing a GIVE South Center was to allow for the southern portion of the county residents to have better access to a center to address transportation and other logistic concerns. The proposed site is approximately one mile from the Gwinnett-DeKalb County line and is not a central site to meet the southern portion of the county's need.
2] Location of the center next to an existing elementary school does not provide the example and frame of reference for younger students. The two existing Give Centers (East and West) are located in commercial areas and neither is within 3 miles of an existing elementary school. Proposed site is in a residential area.
3] Location of the center next to a planned Gwinnett County Park is not conducive to maintaining student focus. Approved amenities of the park include areas which would be counterproductive to ensuring GIVE student's focus, i.e. skate park, basketball courts, etc.
Based on these aspect, the within signed individuals respectfully request that the establishment of GIVE South at the location next to Anderson Livsey Elementary School be reconsidered.
