cursive writing

This year on the first day of school the 8th grade students were all informed that cursive would be required on all school assignments and notes. This is the first time that 8th grade was informed of this requirement. We were also informed that this would be effective immanently. This gave no time for students time to refresh there memory on cursive or learn cursive. Most students do not remember cursive. Some students never were thought cursive and those who have learned cursive writing only in their grade. Today cursive is not commonly used besides to write your name.

Print is a lot easier for most students to read. The main reason students take notes is so they have an easy way to review before a test. If students have trouble to read their notes their test scores will most likely go down. For students who will have to learn or relearn cursive writing it will take a lot longer to write than print would. Students will be more focused on their writing than what is being said by the teacher. Students may miss important information.

The students who participated in this petition agree that cursive writing should be optional and NOT a requirement. 8th grade has a lot of challenging tasks and assignments. Students should have been given time to learn cursive by being informed of the new policy in June 2018 so that students could learn or study cursive as part of the summer reading program.
