Slaughter Statistics       

The latest slaughter statistics published by Defra indicate that the UK cow slaughterings in September 2013 totalled 47,819 head. At this level cow slaughterings increased by 15.8% compared with the previous month. Similarly, the number of heifers slaughtered during September recorded an increase compared with the month earlier to 53,917 head, up 13.3%.

Compared with the corresponding month a year ago cull cow throughputs at UK abattoirs were 11.8% lower while heifer throughputs increased by 5.7%.

The average dressed carcase weight of cows increased by 1.1kg/head between August and September 2013, to 300.5kg/head, heifers also increased by 0.6kg/head. Year on year the average dressed carcase weight of cows increased by 1.3%, whilst heifers decreased by 1.1% to 316.8kg/head.
