Protect the Cherokee Foothills

Target:
environmental advocates, allies, and activists
Our goal is to help protect from aggressive development the Cherokee foothills of South Carolina and Georgia, including but not limited to the 'corridor' along Highway 11. Already such development is occurring, at a very rapid pace. Our goal is to slow development and to bring some attention and regard to the unique history, people, and culture of this area. We intend to do this through increasing awareness, knowledgeable action, and unity.

Honoring this petition is honoring the U.S. Native Americans who discovered America(not Christopher Columbus or Amerigo Vespucci). Stop destroying the animals homes/habitats. Let purple mountain majesties thrive untouched for the Cherokee Indians and for the animals that live there.

IT'S BAD ENOUGH A PROLONGED DROUGHT HAS NEGATIVELY IMPACTED THE AREA. FRAGMENTING HABITAT FOR BLACK BEARS, DEER AND OTHER WILDLIFE THAT LIVE THERE IS A DEATH SENTENCE FOR THESE PRECIOUS CREATURES WHOSE ONLY "CRIME" WAS BEING BORN AN ANIMAL!

We are stewards of this earth and all that is in it, as we are stewards of every blessing that God has given to us. The touch of man upon the earth, in the MIGHTY name of progress, brings upon man, the destruction of himself. Sharon

I believe where ever there are the words/and its meaning of development/construction taken place here on our Sacred Earth. Spiritually we sense that our earth, history, people and our culture are in need of protection from what is considered development?? Unfortunately having to be spoken out of concern, the development in this case does not stand for growth, but the destruction of the Cherokee Foothills which are considered Spiritually sacred by the people who Honor the Earth to preserve all.

WE need to stop the erosion and exploitation of our wild areas in this way. Visitors to an area come to explore the natural beauty and history and to meet its people. Over-development is not condusive to this, and instead, more efficient use should be made of existing populated areas and commercial assets.

There will never be justice in America until local and fedreal governments acknowledge the rights of this land's Native People! If the land 'belongs' to anyone- it belongs to them. For thousands of years Native Americans nurtured this land- it has taken less than 300 years for the occupying governent to poison it. Land preservation and the rights of Native Americans go hand-in-hand, and unless we preserve both, America will die from within.

The eastern mountain ranges and foothills are some of the most ancient in the world, it's shameful to even think of covering them in concrete and asphalt.

Land, people, spirit, and history are all entwined. You cannot hurt the land without hurting the people (not to mention hurting nature). The land is sacred.
