Save the Wolves from Slaughter and Sterilization

Target:
University of Alberta/The Alberta Government
Sponsored by:
The Alberta Government is currently endorsing an experiment by the University of Alberta that will sterilize the Alpha male and female and destroy other wolves in the pack.  The U of A plans to destroy the wolf pups by shooting them.

This experiment is partially geared toward satisfying elk hunters.  By decreasing the number of wolves who natually prey on elk there would be more elk for hunters to gun for.

We ask all opposed to this erroneous experiment to please sign the petition and forward on to any one you feel would be interested.   If you are the 1000th signature please forward onto  uofapres@ualberta.ca .  You can also contact the Government of Alberta directly with your own comments concerning this matter.  http://alberta.ca/home/Feedback.cfm

Nature has a plan that science or technology cannot rival. It is mans impact on the habitat which influences the ecology of the wildlife involved, namely the elk and wolf. We need not try to manipulate nature. We need to take a close look at our actions and make changes.

Not acceptable, not ethic, not humane !! Alberta should be proud of its wolves and protect them..

It boggles my mind as to why these intelligent people didnt learn anything from what happened in the Yellowstone National Park. If you are going to destroy the pack then why are you leaving the alpha male and female alive but sterilized? What good is that? What is going to happen when they die? As some one that has been around hunting my whole life, thats just the way elk hunting is. If you see one great, if you happen to take a bull even better. Its part of the sport. Paitence, and accepting that it may take you years to get the big one. Its not the wolves, and the approach to this "issue" is wrong. Why didnt us around the area that will be affected in the long run have a say in this. Its our tax dollars isnt it??

1) Sterilizing some of the wolves can change the way their packmates relate to them and upset the status relations in the pack. It's a bad idea. 2) Scientific investigation should not be shaped by political influence. It often is, but that's no excuse for doing it.

remember what happen to the land when wolf were taken out of the yellowstone park in the states, it thew off the natural balance of life, so they then had to bring them back, to help fix the problem it created

Surely the destruction of Alpha males and females will completely decimate the wolf pack. This is extremely short-sighted and insane. Stop this wolf cull and kill.

This is not a study nor is such a "study" acceptable. This is wanton slaughter of an animal that has as much right "to be" as do elk, deer, etc. This project is obviously being funded by parties that do not have Alberta's wildlife and wellbeing at heart. This government needs to show it cares for us, for the habitat of wildlife, for wildlife itself.

Do the words do unto others as you'll have done to you ring a bell with anyone? For crying out loud! This is getting ridiculous and I seriously hope that common sense will rule as opposed to this senseless act.

This is sick and wrong. These wolves are from mother nature, god created them. This means they are supposed to be on this earth, they are here for a reason. Keep the wolves safe and free!

So very sad that we just feel like every place on earth should be touched by human beings. It's been shown too often that we don't have the wisdom needed to look at all the ramifications of what we do. Look at what has happened to the sharks of the ocean - without them the balance is out of whack. This "decision" seems headed in the same direction. Very sad.

It is inconceivable that anyone could imagine this is a good idea. Killing animals for sport is highly disagreeable, but shooting wolf puppies (as ugly as it has been portrayed in the petition) to provide MORE hunters MORE animals to shoot is completely insane. More people need to GO VEGGIE!!!

Humans do not have the right to determine what we do to these animals. Always taking control over nature... this is not the way... how inhumane can you become by these acts and decisions.. Man is the worst predator of all..

Beyond reprehensible and beyond the guise of research for sure. Hunters should learn to use video games to play out their hunts - and stop changing the face of our planet. Nature did not intend for us humans to "cull" for pleasure or research. Grow up HUNTERS!!!!!!!!

The Alberta government is obviously handling the situation with the elk in the same inept way that they are handling the decimation of the woodland caribou, once again pretending that the wolves are the problem. Shame on the U of A for backing this farce and not looking for alternatives! U of A caribou researcher Piotr Weclaw concluded "the animals [caribou] could co-exist with uncontrolled wolf populations in northern Alberta, but if human developments continue at the current rate, the number of caribou in the area will drop…until they are eliminated from the area in 37 years” (www.uofaweb.ualberta.ca/researchstudents ).

what are these people thinking?! this is disgusting and shocking news of how they want to go about it. let me get this straight....they want to kill a species to bring up the population of another species so that they can kill it anyway?!?! how can you see any reason in that?! plus, wolfs are low in numbers enough, why bring it down even lower?? all i have to say is it is horrible and wrong and they have sick sick minds. period.

The problem is ENCROACHMENT by humans, not a wolf. That is a typical human responce KILL, KILL, KILL. And that is really sad.

Anyone who knows anything about wildlife management knows that this is a ridiculous idea. I can't believe someone would allow this kind of practice to go on. Most likely the elk population is down because of loss of habitat, which is the most common reason for any species' population to to be down. So don't destroy something beautiful(wolves), work on creating something (habitat.)

As usual, things (information, logic, basic compassion) are twisted to suit the growth of business - and in Alberta, it's business put in the drivers' seat without government taking on the responsibility of its role to let businesses know what's acceptable and what is not. Like a previous petitioner writes: the indications are "not much thought has been given to wellbeing of the species involved (besides humans)."

Here's an idea; why not stop the bloody hunters from killing the wolves? We don't need the food, or the heads on our walls. We can go to the grocery store and get whtever we need, and we've already screwed mother nature up enough as it is. Why can't we just leave well enough alone? The Alberta government is obviously full of cruel rednecks, that's why. Point your double barelled shotgun at your own heads, It'll do us alot more good.
