4-Way Stops Needed on North Decatur Road and Springdale and Oakdale Roads

The main concern of the neighbors who live around Springdale, North Decatur Road, Cornell, Oxford, and Oakdale is the safety of the drivers and the pedestrians who pass through the North Decatur Rd on the corridor between Briarcliff and Lullwater. Currently, there are stop signs on Springdale and Oakdale (traveling North-South), but no stop signs on North Decatur (traveling East-West). We are petitioning for Stop signs to be placed on North Decatur Rd to improve safety. We believe the solution for safety on North Decatur Road is to take a cohesive approach throughout the entire road.

The corners of North Decatur Road and Springdale/Oakdale Roads in Druid Hills heave become the site of multiple accidents within the past few years.

Those who are traveling North-South on Springdale have difficulty crossing North Decatur Road or turning into North Decatur Road because vehicles on North Decatur Road often speed up around these  intersection in order to "catch the light" one block away at Briarcliff Rd or Oxford Rd. While the speed limit is 30 MPH, vehicles routinely drive much faster than the 30 MPH speed limit. In addition, large electrical posts block the view of those on Springdale, requiring that they move forward into the intersection to cross it.

A 4-way stop would allow traffic to continue flowing, without speeding. It would allow those coming from Springdale and Oakdale to cross North Decatur Road or turn into North Decatur Rd safely. It will allow those on North Decatur Rd turning into Springdale and Oakdale (often to head to Emory) to turn safely.

This is a residential neighborhood, where many walk to work, to school, for exercise and to visit, further down, the businesses of Emory Village. The speeding on North Decatur makes it difficult for pedestrians to safely cross the street. A 4-way stop will allow pedestrians to cross safely.

Thank you for your attention to this important safety matter.
