Educate the educational professionals

As a parent of a child with special needs and being one of the small percentage of parents to successfully find a special provisional placement for my son, I have noticed many, many parents and children suffering in a school not equipped for them. That is of course, if they are in a school at all. I speak to many parents that say they are having a terrible time trying to get their child into a school that can provide a comfortable, safe environment and actually receive a decent education.
    My story.... briefly!
At 2, my son attended pre-school who acknowledged my concerns and helped to get the diagnosis (the first of many battles to come!)
He attended a ‘normal’ Nursery, problems started to display but he got through that year.
Reception.... NIGHTMARE! he wasn’t able to do a full day as they didn’t have the staff, facilities and just blatantly couldn’t cope with his needs/behaviour.
He often soiled himself, left to sit in it as they apparently wasn’t allowed to clean him?! Was never in the classroom and often doing time out! I removed him after 6 weeks.
I home schooled for the rest of this year as I wasn’t given any advice or support. Then I, myself ALONE discovered the EHC plan. Previously known as a statement. I started my work on this!
Year one - NIGHTMARE 2! - EHC plan achieved, full support throughout the school day was meant to be given. He started a new school BUT put back a year into reception as they didn’t have any places in the correct year, so I was told!
He was never in the classroom, sat in a corridor on his own with one to one support. Very rarely did he do a full school day let alone play in the playground at playtime with the other children! Often spoiling himself and being very agitated and sad. Many many meetings and finally I got him into a DSP school, wonderful!
BUT it then came to my attention that many many other children and their families are suffering. There is not enough places or special schools to support these children. The teachers do not have the knowledge, experience or understanding enough to be able to provide an education, let alone a safe environment for them and the other children.
I think every teacher needs to be given much more in depth training and educating about special needs and how to provide for those children. Every school should have a special play area and room equipped for all needs.
I have witnessed these children sitting alone, playing alone, having meltdowns surrounded by teachers who are so uneducated and clueless! The suffering of the children and their families is not necessary.
We care a lot about the damages of other factors of life yet this seems to not be spoken about unless you yourself are suffering.
In 2014 66% of adults with autism/Aspergers admitted to having suicidal thoughts. If nothing is done about the educational issues this percentage will only rise!
