Tell the Washington Post: Interracial Relationships Are NOT Anti-American!

  • by: Julie Rodriguez

The Washington Post owes millions of people around the US an apology for a recent article they published by columnist Richard Cohen. In the peice, he called out New York City Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio for his “gag-inducing” marriage to a bisexual black woman:

People with conventional views must repress a gag reflex when considering the mayor-elect of New York — a white man married to a black woman and with two biracial children. (Should I mention that Bill de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, used to be a lesbian?) This family represents the cultural changes that have enveloped parts — but not all — of America. To cultural conservatives, this doesn’t look like their country at all.

That's a picture of de Blasio and his family up above -- does this all-American family make YOU gag?

While Cohen may find interracial marriage disturbing, most Americans simply don’t share his views. A Gallup poll in June found that 87% of the US population approves of black-white marriage, including 70% of Americans over 65 (presumably, the more “traditional” audience Cohen is referring to).

By publishing Cohen’s disgusting generalizations, the Washington Post is not only attacking millions of loving mixed-race families across the US, they’re also unfairly assuming that their communities are filled with narrow-minded bigots.

Tell the Managing Editor and Owner of the Washington Post that Americans have nothing against families like Bill de Blasio and Chirlane McCray -- and that in fact the vast majority of people don’t even care. If enough of us speak out, maybe they'll do the right thing and apologize to de Blasio and McCray and the millions of other interracial couples in the US.

Dear Mr. Bezos and Mr. Garcia-Ruiz,

When people read the Washington Post, they’re tuning in for nuanced coverage of politics and current events -- not racist generalizations and outdated attitudes toward the interracial marriages that make up more than 8% of the families in the US.

Your recent column by Richard Cohen wasn’t just offensive toward people in mixed relationships and families, it was also wrong. The truth is, the stats just don’t back up Cohen’s claim that “conventional” Americans find interracial marriages sickening. In fact, Gallup’s latest stats show that an overwhelming majority of the US population -- 87% -- approve of mixed-race marriage.

Do the right thing and issue a correction to this column. And please apologize to the millions of families out there who you’ve unfairly painted as deviant just for following their hearts.
