Ask Italian Government: Invest in Climate Change Research to Save the Mountain Goat!

Please sign and share this petition in an effort to get the Italian Government to invest in climate change research as a way to help the wild mountain goats and other animals in the Italian Alps to survive. In recent decades these animals have been withering away due to a warming climate. These climate changes are having significant impacts on natural systems in the environment, including health and body size of numerous animals such as the wild mountain goats. Climate change research can help in developing scientific plans to save these animals from endangerment.

It has been said that "Over the past few years there's been quite a few papers coming out showing that all sorts of species, from mammals to fish to birds, have tended to get smaller as climate warms." Scientists haven't expected such a significant change among the Alpine goats in such a short period, and they "don't know enough about how extreme climate might affect the population of this species." Continual climate changes will threaten the survival of the animals.

Studies have been done with yearlings rather than adults to be sure of comparing animals of the same age as they began looking for a cause. Decreases in food availability or quality as a result of global warming have been implicated in size declines in other species. It was discovered that there wasn't a decline in food and vegetation but the goats behaviors have change. One of the researchers stated "It's been known that these animals spend more time resting when it's hot, so that led to the idea that maybe it's the climate directly that is changing their behavior, rather than the indirect means of affecting their food." The problem is that they are justifying their depleting sizes rather than investing in more studies on climate changes and the factors that affect the health and well-being of the wild mountain goats and other animals before they all perish.

Climate change research and studies are being conducted in other areas world-wide in an effort to help the environment and all the animals that rely on it for survival. We need to encourage the Italian Government to invest in climate change research in order to develops steps that can help the wild mountain goats to survive happy and healthy in the natural habitat they are used to.

Italian Government Fish & Wildlife Services & Environmentalists - As other areas are fully engaged in climate change research to save the environment and wildlife that dwell within, we are asking that you also seriously engage in such research. Although you cannot effectively change the weather, through the research you can develop programs and plans that can help all the animals like the Chamois wild mountain goats to survive. Invest in climate change research and make every effort to save and protect all animals that roam your Gran Paradiso National Park and the Italian Alps. Please help these animals.
