Climate change won't wait! The UK must meet its 2020 renewable energy targets.

  • by: Frances Donnelly

As the temperate rises, storms increase in regularity and intensity, the ice caps melt, weather patterns shift, and the UK floods, scientists and the public are in agreement: it's time to act!

But the UK government is not doing enough to limit the severity of climate change. Please sign this petition to demand an immediate plan be drawn up detailing how to reach, as a minimum, the agreed target of 15% renewable energy by 2020.

The 2020 target is a modest one. And yet MPs have warned that the UK will fail to meet it. Take-up of clean fuels for heating and transport are not on track. The energy and climate change committee (ECC) has found that ministers do not have a clear plan for meeting the renewables target.

Governments failing to meet renewables targets is reckless and unacceptable. It also supports a complacency that humans simply cannot afford to indulge in any longer.

Climate change is not going to wait. It can't be appeased with explanations or promises. The government needs to act NOW to start adapting to a fossil-free energy system.

Please sign this petition to tell the government that they must draw up immediate plans that ensure we have 15% renewable energy sources by 2020. Our governments are deciding the future of humanity, and we must stand together to demand that they act immediately and in the interests of our survival. Let's keep pushing in the right direction, away from fossil fuels and towards a sustainable future.

The Rt Hon Greg Clark MP:

I am writing today to urge you to demand that an immediate plan be drawn up to ensure that the target of 15% renewable energy sources by 2020 is met.

Climate change is unfolding at an alarming rate, and it's already costing the UK financially and, for many, personally in the devastating floods.

The UK's 2020 commitments are a modest contribution to the global struggle to mitigate the climate disruption that will affect all of us.
