Dogs are our family. We get them to love. We bond and are emotionally attached to them, just like we are with our children. For those of us who are childless, they are "our children".
By signing this petition, we will change how our family dog is viewed in the eyes of the law when it comes to divorce. Right now they are viewed as "property" and not part of the family. This petition will ensure that judges address proper custody assignments for those couples who cannot agree themselves on the best interest for the dog and its family. It will be written into the divorce rulings as a legal judgment.
This will help to prevent three things:
1. One party using the dog as leverage, to spite or hurt the other party.
2. Help to keep the census lower in the NH animal shelters -where a lot of dogs end up after being taken and used for one of the aboue.
3. Prevent unnecessary euthanasia when the shelters cannot find a home for the pet.
