Congress, Don't Stop States from Labeling GMOs!

  • by: Kristi Arnold
  • recipient: Congressional leadership Rep. John Boehner, Rep. Eric Cantor, Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, Rep. Steny Hoyer

Vermont is set to become the first state to require labeling identifying food that contains GMO ingredients - but some lawmakers in Congress want to take away the ability of individual states to require this labeling! Ask Congress to kill this bill and let the people decide if they want to know about GMOs in their food.

Maine and Connecticut are the only US states that have passed GMO labeling laws, though their proposals would only go into effect if surrounding states also pass similar laws. GMO labeling is required in 64 countries, including the European Union.

The US Department of Agriculture voiced concerns over the devastating environmental effects of GMOs. And a recent study found that global classification of GMO foods is fundamentally flawed and “has failed miserably” at protecting public health.

Tell Congress to stop meddling and allow voters to decide whether GMO labeling is appropriate for their states!

Dear Sirs and Madam,

We the undersigned ask that you allow voters to decide whether to require GMO labeling.
