Urge the Administration to Return Our Frees

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that our free periods that have been relocated to the final periods on Wednesday be reintegrated into our weekly schedules. We feel that the placement of these periods at a time when we are already dismissed from classes both (a) undermines the spirit of the S.A.V.E program and (b) removes the five free periods that the Senior class is accustomed to and has been entitled to in past years.

The very nature of the S.A.V.E. program was to allow Seniors the opportunity to perform Chesed and give back to the community in place of standard classes. The S.A.V.E. program begins in the final month of Senior year for a reason. If it is done in place of our free periods, why not begin the program in August? The answer is that S.A.V.E. makes tiring and increasingly bored students enthusiastic through Chesed. By placing S.A.V.E. in our free periods, much of that enthusiasm is removed. Many of us may begin to look at it as a chore, rather than a privilege. That is unhealthy and counter-productive to the school’s mission and the purpose of the S.A.V.E. program.

Finally, since it is mandatory, attendance is taken, and grades are given out, S.A.V.E. should be listed on our schedules as a class. Our new schedules should say “S.A.V.E.” on them and our free periods should be reintegrated elsewhere on the schedule. Thank you.
