Glucosamine sulphate warnings , warning of possible inflammatory bowel side effects

last October I started taking glucosamine sulphate to try to help my joints as my arthritis was spreading to other joints.

Middle of December I started having awful stomach cramps and really bad diarrhoea. The Drs kept giving me anti spasms drugs such as boscupan and none of them worked. I was up most of the night and could not control my bowels at all and ended up having to wear incontinence pants. The Drs took samples and no bacteria was found.

I was told it must be a virus and could not work because it may be infectious. I was then given codeine and was told this all that they could do. I was ill all over Christmas and was unable to eat anything that was high fibre, salad, cabbage and anything that went through my system quickly. This did not leave a lot that i could actually eat. My Christmas was ruined. I still was suffering after Christmas and fought to be referred to consultant because it had gone on for over a month.

i was in so much pain in the early hours of one morning that my husband took me to A & E. They gave me morphine for the pain and said I needed referring as it was colitis.

i was eventually referred and the consultant sent me for examination and catscan which showed signs. Of colitis

I happened to go into Holland and Barrett where I often get vitamins, and asked for something to help my symptoms. Luckily I spoke to a lady who was ver knowledgeable about vitamins and asked what I was already taking. When mentioning glucosamine sulphate, she told me this may be the cause of my colitis as it can cause bowel problems.

i stopped taking them straight away and 4 weeks later all of my symptoms disappeared,I was now back to normal, proving that glucosamine sulphate was the cause.

Glucosamine sulphate is known to give people symptoms of colitis and can cause colitis and other bowel problems such as IBS.

The manufacturers and the people that sell these do not have warnings on the product or possible side effects of these really bad health conditions. These conditions cause a great deal of pain and suffering and damage to people's bowels, sometimes resulting in some of the intestines taken away and colostomys being used.

These manufacturers must be made, by law, to state clearly on their products all health risks, especially this one and the people that sell them should also be made aware and tell their customers by law as this is a real health issue causing the NHS a lot of money because people who take these have no idea that these supplements could be the cause of their condition as it was for me.

the sooner we get these warnings put onto the product, the sooner people will learn how I'll these can make them and a lot of people could be suffering now and not know that this supplement could well be the cause of their problems. Some people may have had surgery to remove pieces of their intestines for no reason. This has got to stop.

Dear rt hon Secretary of State for health

please make manufacturers of supplements put all side effects and warning on their packaging and suppliers, on their description.

glucosamine sulphate is known to cause symptoms of colitis and inflamed bowel conditions and people need to be warned about this.

These warnings and making people's awareness will save the NHS a lot of money as well as stop a lot of people suffering from this very painful, debilitating condition. I have experience of this and was told to stop the glucosamine and within weeks was back to normal again. I had cost the NHS a lot of money with prescriptions, hospital referral, scans and consultants time. I had wasted everybody's time and lost earnings due to not being able to work so had also cost the taxpayer money as I lost earnings and didn't pay tax because of my lack of earnings.
