What's in your water? Pollution is Everywhere !

Do you know if your water is safe? One would think that in the world’s wealthiest nation we would not have to worry about whether or not our drinking water is safe for consumption, or our local waterways safe for recreation. But the facts clearly show that clean water is not something we can take for granted:
Nearly one trillion gallons of raw human sewage flows into our waterways each year.1
Up to 3.5 million Americans fall sick each year from swimming in polluted waters. Pollutants include pathogens such as bacteria, parasites, and viruses, as well as pharmaceuticals and synthetic hormones.2
Nearly 50 percent of our nation’s streams, rivers, and lakes are too polluted to support swimming and fishing.3
In any given year, about 25 percent of U.S. beaches are closed at least once or fall under advisories because of water pollution.4
More than 700 different chemicals have been found in U.S. tap water, of which the EPA classifies 129 as particularly dangerous.5
Algae blooms kill aquatic life in such iconic places as the Gulf of Mexico, Great Lakes, and the Chesapeake Bay.
The amount of fish advisories to limit or avoid eating certain fish due to contamination with chemical pollutants has increased from 5 percent of total lakes and streams in 1993 to more than 40 percent in 2010.6

We must stop polluters from treating our cherished waterways as their personal dumping grounds. And we are on the verge of a HUGE victory. Less than two months from now, the Clean Water Rule — which closes polluter loopholes in the Clean Water Act — will be the law of the land. That is if we can keep polluters from killing the rule in Congress or through litigation.

Along with our $1.8 million campaign7 to defend the rule, we are also developing campaigns to reduce the massive amount of pollution that comes from factory farms, and helping communities develop better systems to control storm water and wastewater runoff.

We can’t do it without you! Thanks to your support, we’re raising the voice of clean water champions to a crescendo that no amount of polluter lobbying and funding can muffle.
The Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling rig exploded five years ago,

killing 11 people and spilling millions of barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. It was the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

But fossil fuel extraction on public lands and in public waters is disastrous even when everything goes as planned, with oil, natural gas and coal extraction on publicly owned federal lands and waters responsible for more than 20% of all U.S. carbon emissions.1

This massive fossil fuel giveaway to private companies is fueling runaway climate change and torching the planet. That’s why we’re joining our friends at Rainforest Action Network to demand the real leadership on climate that President Obama promised and Americans deserve.

“Increased fossil fuel extraction on public lands is incompatible with stopping runaway climate change. I urge you to issue an executive order that instructs federal agencies to stop granting new and expanded leases to extract coal, oil and gas from public lands and coastal waters.”

Oil Change International has been fighting for a Separation of Oil and State. We expose the true costs of fossil fuels and hasten the coming transition to clean energy.
We believe in data-driven, people-powered, change.
We build our movement’s power, by supporting critical efforts such as the People’s Climate March in New York City last September, which brought 400,000 people to the streets to call for climate action.
We expose the lies of the fossil fuel industry. Our groundbreaking analysis in 2011 first exposed the fact that most of Keystone XL’s oil – which was sold to America as energy independence - would be exported, and now it is clear the President heard our message.
Our data drives real-world change. Our reports and websites reveal the extent of government support for fossil fuels – both in the U.S. and globally. This data has informed and encouraged pledges by some banks and governments to stop funding fossils. Much more still needs to be done.

Progress Florida
“[Gov. Rick] Scott has overseen the dismantling of Florida's environmental and wildlife protections for too long. It's time Floridians speak in an overwhelming and united voice and tell this governor that our state's treasured wildlife and state parks must be protected for future generations.”

The above quote is from my editorial in the Orlando Sentinel this week. From the black bear, to the panther, to our state parks, and more, the Florida we love is under attack by Gov. Scott, his allies in the legislature, and his administration.

We recently told you about the threat posed to the Florida black bear and the critically endangered Florida panther. After ignoring public outcry and approving the hunting of black bears, Gov. Scott’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has now floated the idea of possibly removing the panther from the endangered species list. More than 5,000 of you responded and signed our petition to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which can deny the state commission’s proposals. We’ll keep you posted as this issue continues to develop and on our plans to deliver these petitions.

In the meantime, Gov. Scott’s allies have opened up a new front in the War On Wildlife. Attorney General Pam Bondi joined a lawsuit that if successful, would eliminate federal protections for Florida’s streams, ponds, and wetlands and give Scott and his allies more control1.

And it was just reported this Tuesday that there’s been a huge 85% drop in the enforcement of environmental laws under Gov. Scott2.
