Vietnam will assume the Chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2010.  As a member of this organization it is expected that the member countries will comply with the fundamental principles of ASEAN which are set out in its Charter:

* Promoting regional peace and identity, peaceful settlements of disputes through dialogue and consultation, and the renunciation of aggression.

* Upholding international law with respect to human rights, social justice and multilateral trade.

* Settlement of differences or disputes by peaceful manner (1976)

The Bat Nha Monastery, in the Lam Dong province, has been attacked and destroyed, and aggression and violence have been used to evict 400 peaceful Monks and Nuns who are now taking refuge in Phuoc Hue Pagoda. Authorities continue to put pressure on them through intimidation, threats and public false denunciation.

This is in contradiction of international law.  It ignores human rights and social justice stated as one of the principles of ASEAN.

We urge the Vietnamese Government to stop discriminating and ensure that these 400 monastics at Bat Nha Monastery are allowed to live together  and practise in peace as law abiding Vietnamese citizens.

We call on the current Chairman of ASEAN, the Prime Minister of Thailand, Abhisit Vejjajiva, to initiate a re-evaluation of the appointment of Vietnam to the position of Chair 2010, in view of the Vietnamese Government's failure to protect the basic rights of innocent Vietnamese citizens.

We ask for ASEAN influence to ensure that these 400 monastics be offered every assistance.  They have been targeted merely for practicing their beliefs and now need help in terms of security of accommodation, freedom from harassment and freedom to practise their religious beliefs without persecution.

For the latest report on Bat Nha please see http://helpbatnha.org/

We have faith that ASEAN have the power to reduce the violence that is happening right now and restore peace.

The world needs ethic and spirituality, not only economy. Let the monks bring this aspect to Vietnam.

I am sure that the Vietnamese authorities will adjust their point of view in order that liberty of thinking, peace and fraternity - for which we demonstrated in the 60`s to sustain the liberty of Vietnam against the war - will be retored for all these young bouddhists of Bat Nha. They are the future of Vietnam.

The Vietnamese government in its intolerance for religious freedom and its downright abuse of faithful people such as the monastics of Bat Nha, defies the very term "civilization". Please consider your own spiritual roots.

La communaute de Bat Nha est un prolongement très concret de l'action positive des Organismes internationaux : ils est du devoir de ces organismes de faire jouer leur influence et l'influence des médias pour sauver la vie des personnes qui consacrent leur vie à aider leurs prochains.

I spent several months in Vietnam, a country where my son is born.I have been met Thay and his monastic community. On Vietnam, the world, can be proud of him, he aspires to peace. I would currently be proud of the Vietnamese authorities, and finally violence ceases. Thank you!

Buddhism does not promote any kind of violence, on the contraries, it always promotes to not damage anyone, not only that, if possible being beneficial to all sentient beings around us and tame our mind. I’m completely agree to avoid any kind of violence in the monastery.

I am really sad to see that the monks at Bat Nha Monestary are not being protected against the acts of violence against them. I would really appreciate any actions that protect the monks and the monestary, securing the most basic human rights.

The world needs committed workers for compassion and human kindness. The Bat Nha monastics are fine examples of people working to help other people. For the government of Vietnam to brutally repress, molest, and attempt to disperse this group of monastics should cause all decent Vietnamese people to feel great shame. But those of us outside looking on must act as well. So I gladly sign this petition in hopes of adding my small voice to the rising chorus of protest against this terrible act of tyranny. Vietnam must know that such uncivilized behavior is not acceptable, and that if it wants international respect it must redress these grievances.
