Save Lyng Easthaugh Lakes! Don't build a holiday park on County Wildlife Site in Norfolk.

Breckland District Council are considering an application to build a holiday park on a County Wildlife Site adjacent to the small hamlet of Lyng Easthaugh in Norfolk. The site was designated by Norfolk County Council in the 1980's and is home to many rare birds, mammals and plants, including species in serious decline such as bittern, barn owl, turtle dove and bee orchids.

The site consists of 7 lakes, marshland, reed bed and river bank and lies in the beautiful River Wensum Valley. The Wensum has been selected as one of a national series of rivers of special interest as an example of an enriched, calcareous lowland river. With a total of over 100 species of plants, a rich invertebrate fauna and a relatively natural corridor, it is probably the best whole river of its type in nature conservation terms. It is supposedly given protection by its designation as a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) and SAC (Special Area of Conservation), yet it is under relentless threat from development along its banks.

No need has been justified for another tourism development in this area and the effect of a park comprising 45 lodges and 100 car park spaces and the associated human disturbance would be devastating to threatened wildlife species.

Our campaign website http://saynotoeasthaughholidaypark.org/ gives more information and images of this beautiful site, its wildlife and some of the damage already done to the environment.
