Require Licensure for Pet Groomers with Routine Inspections

  • by: Anne Housley

In the state of NC there are no requirements necessary to set up shop grooming pets. While it is strongly suggested that those who groom companion animals educate themselves on how to handle pets, how to avoid bites, how to prevent accidents and on caustic and dangerous materials, etc... there are no legal requirements.

On 24 October 2013 Mike and Betsy Gunter carried their two Dachshunds, Dixie and Daisy, to The Pampered Pooch Grooming Facility in King, NC. In 2 and 1/2 hours Betsy picked the dogs up to face a nightmare that continues today.

Dixie has third degree burns, described as Chemical & Heat burns, to her torso. She continues to undergo debridement of her wounds and surgeries to help her live a quality life. The Management of The Pampered Pooch closed their establishment in King, NC, only to immediately re-open under another name ... with STILL NO LICENSE TO GROOM because they are not required to have a license.

A little research shows us that incidents like this are quite common in grooming salons. People who entrust their pets to these establishments do so believing they are in competent hands. But how can anyone claim competency when there are no requirements set forth. A groomer in NC does not even have to take a basic course on how to trim a dog's coat.

No one should be able to "set up shop" and put their hands on a dog or cat without basic skills. yet our state refuses to require this. We the undersigned ask that NC enact a law that will rectify this oversight that has caused harm to many companion animals.
