The first ever ban on factory farming in Australia has been introduced,
but in a jurisdiction that does not have any factory farms.
The Australian Capital Territory will no longer allow battery cages,
sow stalls or debeaking - where the chicken's beak is trimmed to stop cannibalism.
The new law comes after 18 years of campaigning for change by the ACT Greens.
Jed Goodfellow is doing a PhD on animal welfare regulations in Australia.
He says while the new laws are symbolic they will also set a precedent for other states to follow.
'As we saw in Tasmania, the Tasmanian Government has foreshadowed similar legislative development,' he said.
