This petition is to save the last remaining Kmart store in Henderson, Nevada, on Racetrack Road (at the corner of south Boulder Highway). Further, this petition seeks to save the other Kmart store -- and keep it open -- on Sunset Road (at Sandhill Road) in Las Vegas (right on the border of the Green Valley/Henderson neighborhood). Both stores serve different neighborhoods in Henderson, which is right outside Las Vegas. The author of this petition lives near the Racetrack store and has enjoyed going in the store for many years. The Kmart at Racetrack is the ONLY department store in the greater Horizon Hills, Mission Hills and Palm Canyon neighborhoods, as well as in the River Mountain area. The residents of these communities will be economically disadvantaged in the event the Kmart at Racetrack is closed by its corporate owner (Sears). This Kmart on Racetrack Road further serves the community of Boulder City, Nevada, which has no department store. It is generally understood that unsuccessful lease negotiations resulted in the selections of these two Kmart stores in Southern Nevada for closure. Earlier in 2017, Kmart closed its only other Henderson store, on South Eastern Avenue. This petition requests that Kmart corporate/ Sears tries again to negotiate the lease.
And, if those lease negotiations fail, that the Kmart store(s) be reopened/moved to another nearby location(s). Further, this petition asks the respective landlords of the properties -- occupied by the Racetrack Road and Sunset Road Kmarts -- to negotiate in good faith to save these affordable, beloved and much-needed department stores. If these stores are closed, hundreds of local residents will lose their jobs, and local residents will have to travel farther -- and pay more -- to do their department-store shopping.
