Tell MPs: Rebuild Social Housing Before It's Sold! Stop Social Cleansing in London.

The government's proposals to force councils to sell off remaining social housing stock will, in combination with the lowering of the welfare cap to £23,000, make London an uninhabitable city for many. This will only get worse over the next five years and lead to unprecedented levels of social cleansing from the capital.

An amendment to an Early Day Motion (EDM) demanding that any social homes sold must be replaced, like for like, in the same area prior to the sale taking place has been proposed.

19 MPs have signed the amendment so far – now we want you to help too.

Support for this EDM amendment by MPs makes creating a law to do the same more likely. If enshrined in law, it would force the government to empower London's Mayor in seeking to redress this balance, and provide additional social homes for people in one of the world's greatest cities. The Thatcherite campaign of council stock depletion would, over time, be reversed.

Though it focuses on London, social housing is an issue everywhere, and we believe this would be a start.

Stop the social cleansing of London. Your signature can be a part of that. Sign now to email your MP asking them to add their name to this EDM amendment.

To all Members of Parliament,

London is facing a chronic shortage of genuinely affordable and social housing. The capital is becoming an uninhabitable city for many, and with the Government's proposals to force councils to sell their remaining stock this situation is now critical.

Sadiq Khan MP has proposed an amendment (EDM 145) to the law which would empower the Mayor of London to redress this balance, only allowing the sale of council homes once the stock has been complimented with new builds in the same catchment area. This would safeguard the housing stock, prevent depletion, and arrest the loss of families from the capital who rely on social homes.

The government's proposals amount to nothing less than social cleansing of the capital, and simply must be prevented. This EDM gives you the opportunity to do just that.

The signatories of this petition request that you support EDM 145.

Thank you.
