More than 600,000 people, including 165,000 children, die every year from passive smoking, a report from World Health Organisation experts says today. The estimates from the first analysis of the true global toll are based on the best available data across 192 countries and the known effects of exposure.

By 2030 tobacco will kill a predicted 8 million people worldwide each year.

In 2014, there were 8,697 alcohol-related deaths registered in the UK, an age-standardised rate of 14.3 deaths per 100,000 population. Of these, 5,687 deaths were among males (65% of the deaths) and 3,010 among females (35% of the deaths), with rates of 19.4 deaths per 100,000 males and 9.6 per 100,000 females.

Alcohol is taking a tragic toll on British health, with the number of drink-related deaths up by a third since the mid-1980s. Excessive drinking is now implicated in 33,000 deaths a year, according to a report launched yesterday.
