Keep St. Tammany Parish FRACK FREE!

Helis Oil & Gas Company has a permit for an exploratory well to look for oil and gas in a residentially zoned area of St. Tammany Parish. Helis plans to use a process called hydraulic fracturing, also known as “fracking” to access the oil and gas.

During fracking, large amounts of water, mixed with various chemicals, called "fracking fluid" is pumped into the ground under high pressure to crack the rocks below, allowing oil and natural gas to flow to the surface to be collected.

“Fracking fluid” includes hazardous chemicals known to cause cancer and otherwise be toxic. The fracking fluid can leak from the well, into the ground, contaminating our drinking water. This is especially scary for St. Tammany and surrounding areas because we all rely on what’s called a “single source aquaifer” – this means nearly ALL our fresh water, for 1.1. million people, come from this one underground place, that could be polluted by the fracking project.

Fracking is also associated with many other big problems, like: drops in housing and property values, loss of local businesses and jobs and air pollution.
.
With YOUR help we can protect St. Tammany Parish from the hazards from fracking.

453 cities and towns in the United States passed measures against fracking. Even Texas, often considered the birthplace of fracking, just this year banned fracking in the city of Denton.
