On July 9, 2012, three pit bulls owned by Lachain Dever of Dayton, Texas brutally attacked and mauled a Shetland pony that was chained to a fence post on the property. Witnesses to the attack told deputies on the scene that Dever was present and saw the attack but did not attempt to control the dogs.  Dever was still standing by watching the savage attack when deputies arrived. It was only when the police threatened to shoot the animals that Dever walked to his dogs, pulled them from the pony and returned them to their chains in the yard.

The pony, that had been critically wounded, was later euthanized as a result of the injuries and the dogs were taken to quarantine at a local veterinary hospital. Dever was taken in to police custody and police returned to the scene to continue the investigation. While there, they discovered a second horse that was emaciated and appearing to be in poor health. Officials believe that Dever is the owner of all of the animals at the location.
