Stand Against Senator Hanson's Hate Speech: Uphold the Racial Discrimination Act

In Australia, a far-right senator is threatening the human rights of the Australian people. Senator Pauline Hanson is trying to repeal a section of the Racial Discrimination Act that makes it illegal to "offend, insult, humiliate or intimidate" someone due to their race or ethnicity.

If Senator Hanson gets her way, hate speech would be legal again in Australia. In the process of trying to repeal this section of the Act Senator Hanson has engaged with hateful speech herself, questioning the legitimacy of Aboriginal peoples in Australia, calling their concerns "precious", implying that they are simply being too sensitive.

These actions must be condemned and the Racial Discrimination Act must be upheld. Aboriginal peoples in Australia have experienced a long legacy of colonial violence, and Senator Hanson's actions only make things worse.

Sign now to protect the human rights of countless Australians. By signing today you are supporting the rights for people to live without fear of hate speech while condemning its presence in government.

To Prime Minister Turnbull,

As a person who is concerned with the human rights of all peoples I urge you to uphold the current state of the Racial Discrimination Act and not let there be any amendments that would remove the protection of people from hate speech.

This proposal, endorsed by Senator Hansen, would see a massive reversal in the rights of Indigenous peoples and people of colour in your country. This is unacceptable. These rights need to be maintained.

As well, the recent comments by Senator Pauline Hanson, disparaging the legitimacy of Aboriginal peoples in Australia must not be tolerated. She is supporting a change that would allow her to continue her own hateful speech towards indigenous peoples and this must not be allowed to happen.

I urge you to reprimand Senator Hansen publicly and keep the Racial Discrimination Act intact.
