Canada: Condemn Turkey's Human Rights Abuses

Since the attempted coup, the government of Turkey has rounded up and imprisoned thousands of people. Amnesty International reports that many of these prisoners are being denied access to food, water, medical care and are being tortured and sometimes even raped.

The government is using the coup as an excuse for these horrific human rights abuses and must be challenged by the international community to handle the coup in a way that still honours the human rights of the members.

Canada has urged Turkey to follow the "rule of law" when dealing with the coup but has not taken a stand outwardly condemning the human rights abuses. Canada must strongly express its opposition to illegal abuses of Turkey's citizens and send a powerful message to Turkey that it will not turn a blind eye on these infractions.

To PM Trudeau,

As a person concerned with the human rights of all people I urge you to openly and strongly condemn the actions of the Turkish government towards prisoners taken for participation in the coup.

Amnesty International has reported gross violations of human rights including denial of access to water, food and medical care as well as torture, beatings and rapings of prisoners. This is unacceptable.

As the leader of a G8 country you hold power to sway the actions of the Turkish government. I urge you exert this power to stand for the citizens of Turkey and prevent further human rights abuses.
