Ban toxic 'Chemical mowing' on Australia's Gold Coast!

  • by: Paul W
  • recipient: Gold Coast City Council, Australia

The Gold Coast City Council has again proposed to spray our public lawns & parklands with toxic chemicals to slow their growth. The reason? Warm season makes it difficult for council mowers to maintain their workload.
The Gold Coast region is home to thousands of health-conscious families and is one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations, with 12 million visitors annually. We do not want our children crawling and playing on lawns that have been saturated with chemical toxins. These chemicals will damage the health of the community, waterways, tourists who come to enjoy a natural environment and Queensland's public image.

Warnings issued by manufacturers of these chemicals state that they are harmful if absorbed through the skin, corrosive, cause irreversible eye damage, vapors should not be inhaled, personal protective equipment must be worn when spraying them and these chemicals are banned from entering waterways or run-offs. Furthermore, they are stated by manufacturers to render grasses unsafe for grazing animals and their spray-drift causes modifications in plant growth. So why expose humans to them?

Public backlash to chemical spraying forced an end to plans previously proposed in 2011, now Councillor Dawn Crichlow and others are again ignoring legitimate public concern. Please stand against her proposal and demand a promise to permanently shelve such ill-informed measures that are an affront to the community that Councillor's are entrusted to represent.

Councillor Dawn Crichlow and fellow Councillors,

As citizens of Gold Coast City, we demand a promise to permanently shelve your recent proposal to undertake chemical mowing in the Gold Coast region. The community has stated it's opposition to this unhealthy and irresponsible lawn maintenance practice and as our representatives, we expect public acceptance of this by way of a stated commitment to scrap the proposal permanently.

Yours in expectation,

The sovereign signatories of the above petition and citizens of Gold Coast City.
