Demand safe transportation to school for our children!

Our elementary school children are forced to walk over a mile through the woods, across busy intersections with speeding traffic, and around many registered sexual offenders in order to arrive at College Park Elementary School. Children ranging from the ages of 5-10 are expected to negotiate this terrain on a daily basis to attain an education.
Over a decade ago, the Virginia Beach School Board had an independent consultant assess our community for the school transportation department, and determine if it offers safe routes for our children to get to school without access to a school bus. The wooded greenbelt pathway, which winds behind the homes in the community, was determined as a viable means for the elementary school-aged children to travel to school. Obviously, many things have changed since the assessment in 2002, and this is no longer a safe area for our children to travel.
There is a bus that travels the main street of our neighborhood and crosses both of the busy intersections; however, it does not stop anywhere in between because of the "zoning" done many years ago. Just 1 or 2 additional stops would provide our children with a safe mode of transportation to school, without altering the bus's route or adding children. Due to the current unsafe conditions, many parents within our "walking zone" community drive to the nearest bus stop to take advantage of our tax paying rights to utilize transportation. Unfortunately, this bus stop (located at a daycare center) is located at the intersection of another busy street, where cars speed around the curve. With the amount of children at this stop (daycare and additional 'walking zone' children) it is extremely unsafe to manage 20+ children within a busy parking lot! Please join us in demanding that the Virginia Beach School Board allow the transportation department to provide additional bus stops for the children in our community.
