Tell Governor Sandoval to Have a Heart: Welcome Syrian Refugees!

Nevada welcomes 50 million touists on average every year. Since 1992, 5 generations of my family has traveled to Las Vegas every summer and New Year’s Eve. The faces of the youngest generation glow with the inviting reflection of the bright lights of the casinos that line the Las Vegas strip. I was so happy and comfortable in Las Vegas that I moved there in 2007 and formed a community of friends, many of them hardworking, taxpaying, law abiding refugees.

The people of Las Vegas joke that 99% of the city’s population is from somewhere else. So it was quite shocking that Governor Sandoval would pen a letter to President Obama questioning the refugee resettlement progam’s screening process as a means of delaying the arrival of Syian refugees.

Since the 1970’s an average of 1,800 refugees a year from all over the world have called southern Nevada.home. They go through a rigorous screening process at the refugee camps by the UN Refugee Agency, US Department of State, US Department of Homeland Security, and other agencies such as Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada.

It can take on average 7 years for a refugee to make it to Nevada with a visa
Less than 1% of refugees make it to resettlement. Once they’re here, resettled refugees are the least likely potential terrorists out there, according to The Economist.

Syrian refugees are vulnerable. To deny them a safe space out of fear is to aid Daesh in further terrorizing them. Nevada has welcomed more than 40,000 refugees over the past 45 years. That welcoming spirit is what I grew to love about Las Vegas. Please join me in calling on Governor Sandoval to extend this welcoming spirit to Syrian refugees. If we don’t, the terrorists truly win.

Dear Governor Brian Sandoval,

Nevada is a place that welcomes people of all backgrounds with open arms. Your recent speech at the Global Tourism Summit spoke of how to best invite the world to the Silver State.

Be the leader Nevada deserves and welcome the Syrian refugees.

When we allow fear to govern our decisions, the terrorists win. Please do what's right. Don't let them win.
