Help Stray Animals in Greece!!

The reason I am writing to you is to give you a picture of the huge local problem Greece is facing regarding stray animals. Stray animals in Greece are suffering.
Greece, unfortunately among other issues, has a very large number of stray animals: cats and dogs. Pet abandonment has increased lately, with owners or potential owners, blaming the economic crisis and their inability to provide for them. Pet shops only seem to be interested in selling pure breeds while the streets and institutions are full of half breeds. The shops are selling pets like nothing is going on, while other animals are being abandoned, poisoned, abused or brutally killed(as is the case on the Island of Crete where there has been the repeated incident of animals are actually being tied to barrels or trees, abused and left there to die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)   
All the laws for animal rights have been formed because the animal welfare organizations (and their volunteers) have fought for it, have struggled for it. These organizations have been making efforts to secure food, medicines, shelter and to promote adoptions. And there is no state aid and municipalities do not pay any attention and do not pursue the neutering of the stray dogs in their area. Our government officials do nothing to improve the living conditions for these animals. Of course there has been no result to our requests for the establishment of an Animal Police unit.

Unfortunately, we are aware of how responsible our country is for this sad situation and to quote Gandhi:  “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way in which its animals are treated”. Looks like our nation has been small for a long time… but some of us do not want it to be and are willing to fight for it. 

 Please help us, guide us, aid us in any possible way to make a better world, here too, for our animal companions.
