End Canada's homophobic blood donor rules!

Despite Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's election promises to end homophobic blood donation rules, Canada's blood donation services continue to discriminate against men who have sex with other men.

Canadian Blood Services (CBS) and their sister organisation Héma-Québec only accept blood from gay and bisexual men who have not had sex with another man for a year, despite scientific evidence that men who are sexually active with men pose no greater HIV risk than other groups. The ban has stopped many men from donating during emergency blood drives, and even from donating to their own longterm partners.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau now says it would be ''very, very difficult'' for the government to intervene in the homophobic practices of these independent agencies. The government have put millions into funding further research to support scrapping the homophobic restrictions, but they are failing to take tough action with CBS.

Please sign this petition to demand that the Canadian government commit to a 2018 deadline for CBS to review their homophobic policy. It's time to hold them accountable and to stand up against discriminatory blood donation rules.
PM Justin Trudeau:

CMS persist with homophobic blood donation bans in the name of HIV prevention, despite scientific evidence that the group they discriminate against pose no elevated risk.

It's time for you to live up to your election promise and push for a real change to this outmoded ban. The government and CMS should commit to a 2018 deadline to review the ban on men who have sex with men donating blood whilst sexually active, in light of current scientific data.
