We oppose the NYC Housing Authority's plan to build luxury apartments on playgrounds, community centers and parking lots of Low Income Housing Projects such as Smith Houses in lower Manhattan. For example, NYCHA wants to place more than 1 million square feet on parking lots and a baseball diamond where tenants hold their annual family day. This is grossly unfair to low income residents and takes away their rights to enjoy their community. Upscale apartments would face away from the projects with their own entrance. This action would result in the inevitable displacement of the low income units and should not be allowed.
