International Olympic Committee: Fine or Sanction Countries Who Punish Athletes for Under-performing.

  • by: Amelia Meister
  • recipient: Thomas Bach, Head of the International Olympic Committee

Athletes from all over the world have just come home from the Olympics after giving their all for their countries in their sport of choice. However, some countries are giving their athletes a horrible homecoming: they are threatening arrest or punishment for athletes that did not perform up to expectations.

Countries like Zimbabwe and North Korea have threatened to take action against their athletes. This is a blatant violation of human rights as well as a violation of what the Olympic spirit should be.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has it within their power to fine these countries or sanction them from the games. We must pressure the IOC to do so to honour the rights of these incredible athletes.

Sign today to stand with Olympic athletes, regardless of their achievements. By signing today you are sending a strong message that the human rights of these athletes must be honoured.

To Thomas Bach,

As someone who believes in the human rights of all people I find it appalling to hear of countries punishing their athletes for not performing up to a certain standard at the Olympics. Countries like Zimbabwe and North Korea are threatening arrest and punishment for athletes who under-performed in their eyes.

As the head of the IOC I urge you to fine or sanction these countries to ensure that the human rights of their athletes are upheld. All athletes come to the Olympics to do their best and they should not be punished for how they fared on a global scale.

I urge you to take decisive and immediate action and help protect the lives of these Olympians.
