Integrity and Accountability in the Education System

This is the story of my child at school horse playing with another student at school and the other child suffered personal injury. At Siegel High School my son Kendrick was horse playing with another student. Kendrick had stuck a mechanical pencil in another child's ear while his head was turned. It startled this other child and he turned towards my son. The end result was this other child having a punctured ear drum. The other parents incurred medical expenses due to my son horse playing with him. I just found out about this issue 4 days ago while this family had to endure the stress, strain and most importantly the child's pain for over a month. When the incident happened my son gave them a wrong number to contact me. The School did not check my son's records to verify the contact information. Instead they left a message on someone else's voicemail. Then, my son had 3 days O.S.S. which he pretended to go to school so I was not the wiser. So, 4 days ago I get a little while piece of paper from my son's principal stating I will pay $120.00 or go to court. So my son brought me this little white piece of paper and I was confused because I didn't know anything about it. So the other child's dad, the injured son, myself, and my son went for a meeting this morning to discuss this matter. I was definitely upset this morning that the school did not make voice contact with me and would not release my information to the other parent so we could resolve the issue. It was stated that due to privacy they could not release my Information to him. So, while this family stressed financially about dr bills, wondering if their son was going to be able to hear again, and the son's pain I knew absolutely nothing. It was a horrible feeling to know my son had injured another child and then to hear this family had been dealing with this for over a month and I knew nothing. If I would have known I could have helped financially and what ever else was needed to try to resolve this issue before it escalated to the point it was at. The School says they followed policy and procedure. I asked how when you didn't even make contact with me and then the number you did use was a number given by my son to hide this from me because he was scared to get in trouble. I am asking people to sign this petition to change the policy on if a child gets in trouble the school should have a voice conversation with the parent not a voicemail then most importantly make sure it's the number listed in the child's records. Also, I ask that when a child has suffered a physical injury that the school verified that they immediately give the victim's family the aggressors parents contact information so things can be taken care of and the aggressor's parent can assist or can decide to tell the other parent let's go to court. Either way being the aggressor's parent and finding out about a personal injury 4 days ago while the other family has been dealing with this for over a month is a scarey and heart breaking situation.
