Chicago Police Department, Adopt Task Force Recommendations for Reform!

A report by a Chicago task force reveals claims of racism in the city's police department are justified. According to a report by Vox, the mayor’s office just released a scathing report stating that people of color have disproportionately dealt with negative experiences associated with traffic and foot stops, use of force and bias within the system itself. Furthermore says the report, these displays of racism have gone on a long time and continue today!

Members of the task force investigating the department reported hearing “over and over again “ that citizens were “Stopped without justification, verbally and physically abused, and in some instances arrested, and then detained without counsel.” The investigation, adds Vox, also found that an alarming 74% of police shooting or stunning victims were black, despite that this group accounts for only 33% of the city’s population.

And worse, the report confirmed that police had lied in their statements about the shooting of Laquan McDonald, the tragedy that prompted this investigation.

Huffington Post points to the report’s more than 100 recommendations for reform, including replacing the current oversight board, adding an inspector to monitor racial bias and expanding the body camera program - all beginning with the superintendent publicly recognizing CPD’s “history of racial disparity and discrimination.”

Not only has CPD severely severed the community’s trust in the city’s law enforcement, it’s abuse of power has cost taxpayers a fortune. Sign this petition to insist CPD adopt the task force‘s recommendations for reform!

To Chicago Police Department Superintendent Eddie Johnson:

As one who believes that law officers must obey the law themselves and treat all citizens with equal respect, I am writing to urge Chicago Police Department to adopt the Mayor‘s task force recommendations for reform.

According to the Huffington Post, based on the findings of the report conducted by “ a mix of legal experts, academics and former Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick,” it was concluded that “CPD cannot begin to build trust, repair what is broken and tattered unless —from the top leadership on down — it faces these hard truths, acknowledges what it has done at the individual and institutional levels and earnestly reaches out with respect. Only then can it expect to engage the community in a true partnership,”

In addition to recommendations that begin with this acknowledgment, the task force suggests more than a 100 other specific actions that basically overhaul the city’s entire law enforcement system, including replacing the oversight board and also its “longstanding community policing model with one focused on citizen “engagement and empowerment.”

Hopefully these recommendations for reform, if adopted, will lead to a system that is effective and just and a model for the rest of the country. There can be no doubt that CPD cannot continue on as it has and regain the trust and respect of the Chicago community.

Therefore I, the undersigned, insist that your department adopt the recommendations highlighted in the Huffington Post report and seriously consider all the others provided by this task force - and begin immediately.
