Congress: Protect Wildlife, Pets and People From Dangerous Body-Gripping Traps

Animal advocates have long argued that the use of indiscriminate body-gripping traps is not only cruel, but poses a risk to the safety of companion animals and people.

In response to concerns about how inhumane and dangerous they are, two congresswomen have introduced legislation that could help bring about the end of the use of two popular types of body-gripping traps - leghold and conibear traps.

The Public Safety and Wildlife Protection Act, which was just introduced by Alma S. Adams and Nita Lowey, will ban interstate commerce and shipments of both leghold and Conibear traps, which they note are used by 90 percent of trappers.

Please sign and share the petition urging your representative to support and co-sponsor this important piece of legislation to protect wildlife, pets and people from these archaic devices that should have no place on our landscape.

As someone who is concerned with the protection of wildlife and the safety of those who enjoy the great outdoors, I was thrilled to learn that federal legislation has been introduced that would restrict     commerce in two indiscriminate types of body-gripping traps.

The Public Safety and Wildlife Protection Act (HR 5560), which was just introduced by Reps. Alma Adams (D-NC) and Nita Lowey (D-NY), would ban interstate commerce in two dangerous types of traps – steel leghold traps and Conibear traps.

While the use of these traps has been restricted or banned in a number of states, and over 80 countries have banned the use of leghold traps, their use is still unfortunately widely legal – despite their potential for causing the suffering of target animals, and the dangers they pose to pets and people.

I sincerely hope you will support and co-sponsor this critical piece of legislation to ensure that wild animals are protected from unnecessary suffering, and that people who enjoy nature won't be put in danger of devices that have the potential to cause serious harm to them and their pets.
