Vegas Police: Premarital Sex Isn't Deadly!

The Las Vegas Metro Police helped sponsor an event called "Choose Purity" with a local church. Geared towards young girls, it was supposed to promote abstinence and warn against the perils of premarital sex.

This event included interviews with pimps and prostitutes, information about the sex trade, and pictures of individuals that had suffered due to drug use, including one woman who was limbless after being in a methamphetamine lab explosion. Two girls also performed monologues about abusing diet pills and getting STDs due to to prostitution, which they ended by climbing into body bags.

It is confusing to figure out what any of this has to do with abstinence. Regardless, those that take abstinence pledges aren't any more likely to refrain from having sex than those that don't, but they are more likely to have unprotected sex. Sex education promoted by the Las Vegas Metro Police would be more effective than fear mongering. Please tell them just that!

Dear Las Vegas Metro Police,

Recently you all co-sponsored an event called "Choose Purity" with a local church that was for young girls. Intended to promote abstinence, it included information about many issues including prostitution, the sex trade, drug use and addiction, and others.

For example, there were interviews with pimps and prostitutes, pictures of people that had been affected by drugs like a woman who lost her limbs due to a methamphetamine lab explosion, and monologues performed by girls about diet pill addiction and STDs from prostitution. At the end, they got into body bags.

Not only are those that take virginity pledges not less likely to have premarital sex, but they are actually more likely to have unprotected sex. Also, it is unclear how any of these parts of the event connect to purity or abstinence.

Instead of fear mongering, please commit to educating young people about healthy sex.

Thank you for your time.
